The Nando’s story started centuries ago, when the Portuguese explorers set sail for the East. The winds of Africa called them ashore and it was there that they were introduced to the African Bird’s Eye Chilli – more commonly known as PERi-PERi. A spice like no other, they used it to create a unique PERi-PERi sauce that put fire in their bellies and ignited passion in their souls.
It was the same PERi-PERi flavour that inspired Fernando Duarte to invite his friend Robbie Brozin to a humble Portuguese eatery in the heart of Rosettenville, South Africa in 1987. After just one bite of the mouth-watering PERi-PERi marinated and basted chicken, they knew it was a taste that had to be shared.
Right from the start, our two founders had great ambitions for their small business. The next few years passed in a blur of long hours and hot kitchens. Riding on the back of their food’s growing reputation, Robbie and Fernando opened a second restaurant, in Savoy, North Johannesburg. And then another - always flying by the seat of their pants, taking risks, feeling as though they could fail at any moment.
From the very beginning, the founders wanted Nando’s to be more than chicken and profit. Their slogan in the early days was “have fun and then make money” but always in the right way, giving people opportunities and making a positive impact on their lives.
The rest is history! Today, you can find Nando’s restaurants and our addictive grocery range right around the world. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or an old friend, we can’t wait to welcome you!
Inspired by the legend of the Barcelos cockerel, Barci (pronounced Barsee) is our brand icon. We’re so proud of him that we place him alongside our name, which features another Nando’s favourite – a PERi-apostrophe. Chicken and PERi-PERi together… a match made in heaven, wouldn’t you say?
Our quirky Nando’s font was inspired by the tradition of sign-writing in Southern Africa. Marks Salimu, an artistic and humble man, classically trained as a sign-writer is the person behind it. Marks hand-painted all our letters and characters onto wooden panels and these were turned into a font.
Our secondary font comes from Johannesburg, South Africa, the vibrant city where Nando’s was born. It is found on road directional signs. It’s straightforward and as it pays homage to our roots, we thought it would be great if our customers could use it to navigate their way around Nando’s.
In Southern Africa, the triangle represents family – something that’s really important to us at Nando’s. It’s why you’ll see triangles featuring in our look alongside other much-loved icons. The flame represents our art of the flame-grill; the heart comes from our beloved Barci. The chilli is such a favourite that we not only have added it to our name in the form of a PERi-apostrophe but also used it for our PERi-ometer.
We’re so passionate about PERi-PERi, we wanted to make it our official colour. So, with a bucket of African Bird’s Eye Chillies in hand, we asked South African Manie Pietersen – a specialist colourist with 24 years’ experience in mixing and matching colours – to help us determine the exact colour of PERi-PERi. He nailed it and we’ve called this colour PERi-Red!
Nando’s started way back in 1987 in Johannesburg, South Africa. We’ve come a long way since then, but we’ve never forgotten our humble beginnings. To remind us of our roots, all our headlines are titled to 87 degrees from North and we love the way this adds a quirky pop of energy to a page.
